I have heard a few podcasters lament, “Legacy is Dead!” I have seen Facebook posts decrying, “Why are they destroying the best format!” Someone may want to tell Jarvis Yu.
Yu ground his way to first place finish at Grand Prix Seattle, this weekend, piloting a lands deck. Oh, and the format? Legacy. Oh, and the attendance? 2,014! That’s how many people were seated to play in the main event. A Legacy Grand Prix … you know, that format that everyone said is dead.
Yu played Christian Calcano in the final round - Calcano was playing Grixis Delver.
The first game was a blistering win for Yu. The second game was considerably longer with Yu absolutely dominating Calcano. When it was all said and done, Yu left nothing on Calcano’s board. It was a flawless victory.
I had watched Calcano throughout the Top 8 and was impressed with how well his deck worked. It very much drew on the strengths of Delver of Secrets (my least favorite card) and Deathrite Shaman (one of my more favorite cards). Calcano pretty much dominated everyone he faced. Until he came against Yu.
It should be noted that Yu and Calcano are friends, according to the commentators.
The final game was my first opportunity to watch Yu and his impressive Lands deck. I have heard of the combo between Dark Depth and Thespian Stage but have never seen it in action. When Yu got it in play super-fast in game one, it became apparent just how strong it is. Devastating is a better word, I think.
Congrats to both competitors!
